What causes aging?

There is a great deal more to aging than simply the natural "process". Each of our genetic structures have a bit to do with how we age, however, many of us accelerate this process through lifestyle choices, stress levels, smoking, excess weight, and exposure to sunlight.

Current research indicates that through these habits or lifestyle choices, we expose our bodies to something called "free radical" damage. Molecules actually attack the DNA of our bodies and have been linked to the genesis of most of our debilitating diseases.

Nature has given our bodies a natural defense to this external attack--and these are known as anti-oxidants. Where can we find anti-oxidents? Vitamins.

However, the consensus today is that we do not get sufficient intake of healthy foods that contain these essential, anti-oxident vitamins to ward off damage resulting from free radicals. A typical adult will (or should) get many anti-oxidents through a normal meal, however the ACE vitamins, (A, C & E) are less likely to be consumed in sufficient quantities.

The solution to help fight aging and free radical damage lies in effective supplementation.

At the time of this writing, it is summer and during this time of year, our lives tend to focus more on outdoor activities. To prevent sun damage, burns, and perhaps skin cancer--very few of us would argue against the use of sunscreens. Unfortunately, not all of us have the same opinion when it comes to supplementation and its immediate and future benefits.

The Argument for Supplements.

If you ask most healthcare practitioners with an "MD" after their name--particularly if they are over the age of 50, they will tell you that supplements are just "expensive urine".

That may be true if you are taking something that will not break down in the body or not be absorbable.

The concept that supplementation is not necessary was derived from the idea that you wouldn't need supplements IF you ate a very wide variety of foods every day. Naturally, that would take about 5 meals a day to accomplish.

On the other hand, if you talk to someone that is an advocate of "alternative medicine", you will be taking 30 bottles of stuff a day. Which is fine too, if you like to spend an endless amount of money on pills and drinks, nevermind the time to take it all! Remember what I said in the beginning about being able to "stick to a diet"? The same how's true here. There is a happy medium. Quality and Moderation.

There has been a revision of the food pyramid along with recommendations that everyone begin to take a supplement to round out their nutritional profile to makeup what they don't get in their food.

Supplements

First off, according to USDA, less than 9% of the U.S. population actually get adequate nutrition through foods they eat. Understand, this is to just to meet what is commonly known as "recommended daily allowances" or RDA's. It is also necessary to understand that these RDA's were established during a time of rationing in America. Approximately 60 years ago, it was determined how much foods could be restricted before people would harm their health! In other words, to decide what the BARE MINIMUMS were for a healthy adult.

Secondly, our food sources are being engineered to be able to withstand long shipping across country and mechanical processing since human labor is being replaced by more machines in today's "agribusiness". For example, the peaches we buy at the market look great, but are as hard as rocks. Leaving them on the counter to soften only succeeds in the peach staying hard but rots from the inside out--meanwhile many of the nutrients and vitamins are lost.

Thirdly, consider that the same 4% of the land in the U.S. is used for food production. That available land for food production has not changed much in the last 50 years except to get smaller--and yet food production has increased dramatically. According to the USDA, there are larger pockets of soil that do not even have certain minerals left in them. If the ground supporting crops lack nutrients, our fresh foods are going to suffer.

Okay, so you've guessed, I am "one of those" - an advocate of using supplements. But not only taking supplements, I also want to make sure whatever I am taking will actually do what I take it for. That is, giving my body nutrition protection. I also want to have something that has been backed by clinical studies in peer review journals like, JAMA, and has sufficient science behind it. So, here's my recommendation.
